Technology in the church
Technology has radically changed the way we experience our church services today. The means of communication, listening to the scripture, praising God, the method of the offering has changed greatly! Comparing with the last ten or twenty years, the use of gadgets in the churches today has grown tremendously. The accessibility of gadgets is improved, the cost has come down, the agility of it is increased, durability is prolonged. However, it has brought a big vacuum in the church as well. I am not going to discuss what good we have received from Technology but what we lost! REMEMBER
1. Bible apps will never replace Bible
Believers and Pastors consider carrying Bible as a burden, so they bring their tablets and Phones as a replacement, thinking it as fashion. My Dad often reminded me and my brother saying "If you both carry your Bible today, Bible will carry you tomorrow." Once upon a time, children, adults and elders use to learn, read, recite and remember scriptures by heart. It's like an inscription in their soul! Now Bible apps in phones have destroyed the ability to learn the scripture because Bible is taken for granted. We have become so self-reliant cos of google and it has drifted us away from the concrete word of GOD.
2. Online church viewing can never be equated with the church.
The purpose of the church is to learn the scripture together, fellowship with one another, grow in maturity and the knowledge of the word, build the kingdom together, reaching the unreached as a church. These are the fundamentals of the church. However, some people think that they can do all these things in isolation sitting before a rectangular LED box! I feel sorry for them :(
3. Social media is a new platform for gossiping.
Often Sunday sermons are criticized in Facebook walls. These discussions will become an open door for anyone to comment on that subject. Eventually, that will lead the group to fight and propagate a false doctrine in that public forum. This small discussion can set a bad testimony to a weaker brother in Christ who will drift away from his walk with GOD. Social media is becoming a powerful tool in the hands of devil, often Christians are the one who distort the truth and stopping the expansion of the kingdom of GOD.
4. Technology is a distraction during Prayer
Prayer can do what a thinking brain cannot do. Decades ago, church congregation will pray earnestly for their personal, family and for the revival of the nation. Prayer was a time where hearts were connected with God. But now, during prayer time, our eyes are fixed to that big digital screens, ears are filled with loud music, envious eyes checking out the neighbours latest mobile phones, admiring the quality of sound, comparing the attire, fascinated by the new beat played by the keyboardist or drummer etc...Unnecessary use of Technology will become a distraction in the church. Prayer should be a time of obliviousness where GOD and GOD alone should be the focus!!
I have seen many people walk out of the church in the middle of the worship service to attend the call of their clients. We have stopped greeting people in the church but we are more comfortable greeting via Whatsapp and Facebook respectively. Technology definitely plays a very important role in our churches but if we don't know how, when and where to limit, it will surely destroy our interactions, feelings, emotions and our relationships. So remember everyone, Church should control the technology -but we should never allow the technology to dictate. Be cautious always cos we are worshipping the creator of heaven and earth.
